For many people with psoriasis, a common problem is that other people do not seem to understand what they are going through and may have misconceptions about their condition.
Finding out as much as possible about the condition and passing information on to family and friends can be the best way of regaining control. There are a number of support groups that offer downloadable or printed information about a variety of topics related to psoriasis.
If you are single, having psoriasis can affect your self–confidence and make it difficult for you to form new relationships. You may worry about what other people think or spend a lot of time trying to hide your condition.

Psoriasis can lead to low self-esteem – making people feel uncertain or negative about themselves.
Having psoriasis – especially if your lesions are on exposed parts of your body – may make you feel self-conscious about your appearance and how other people will react to you.

Building self esteem
Educating yourself and the people around you about psoriasis you can help to protect and
even promote your self-esteem.
Take some time to identify any negative thoughts and feelings you have about yourself and
try to replace them with positive ones.
Building self-esteem has been described as a process that involves a number of steps:
- Gaining a better understanding of yourself, including your strengths, skills and values
- Cultivating your belief in yourself and a developing positive body image
- Developing your problem-solving and communication skills
